Víctor Félix Munet, affectionately known as Cucuíto, was a musician, public servant and community leader connected to Culebra’s history. His life’s work is part of the island’s musical memory, especially through his contribution to calypso and the melodies of his steelpan, a steel percussion instrument.

According to his daughter, Mayra Félix, music had deep roots in his father’s side of the family: both Víctor’s grandfather and great-grandfather were guitarists and composers. Cucuíto carried that heritage forward with his own talent and style, leaving a legacy that his family seeks to preserve and share.

Mayra grew up in Culebra with her father, mother, siblings and relatives from the Félix and Munet branches of the family. From that close connection, she remembers her father as a generous man, devoted to his community and willing to help those in need. His dedication to service is an essential part of the legacy his family preserves.

Shared by Mayra Félix, this collection brings together photographs of his musical, family and community life. Through these images, Culebra Remembered offers a space to learn about and remember Víctor Félix Munet: his music, his relationships and his devotion to the island he loved so much.

Los Isleños in Worcester: Summer 2000

In the summer of 2000, Los Isleños took part in the Latino Festival in Worcester, Massachusetts. As Mayra Félix recalls, the trip was made possible through the efforts and contributions of Dolly, the municipality, Worcester merchants and Mayra herself. These photographs capture that visit and the group's performance at the festival. Mayra identifies Dolly as the woman at the front of the stage in the festival photograph.

Beyond the music, there was a large celebration at Mayra's home, where the musicians also stayed. For her, that gathering came to take on the meaning of a farewell over time: her father, Víctor (Cucuíto) Félix Munet, was diagnosed with cancer in December of that same year and passed away in February 2001. Mayra preserves these images as a cherished memory of the joy and music they shared.

A Tribute During His Lifetime in Culebra

According to Mayra Félix's testimony, this photograph shows a tribute to Víctor (Cucuíto) Félix Munet during his lifetime, organized by Abraham Peña and Dolly in Culebra, in which Manuel Silva also took an important part. Mayra recalls that the Honorable Manuela Santiago Collazo, then mayor of Vieques, may also have contributed to the event. The tribute brought together steelpan performers from eastern Puerto Rico to recognize his musical career and share the music that united them.
